Who am I investing in? The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality

I am in the midst of reading, “Integrity” by Dr. Henry Cloud.  A really good read for anyone regardless of where you stand on spirituality.  Dr. Cloud makes the observation of a friend who is a business owner that says he doesn’t get into a business he doesn’t understand.  Dr. Cloud’s counter is, but “I know of other businesses that you invest in.”  To which his friend replies, “I did not invest in those businesses.  I invested in the people.”

My heart feels that way toward each of you reading The Chaplain To The Outdoorsmen.  I do not necessarily understand your business; however, I understand people… and I’m here for you.

Think with me if you will about the business you find yourself in today.  For some, you are Outdoor TV Hosts, Online Personalities, Outdoor Social Media Experts, Wildlife Biologist, business owners in the Outdoor Industry, as well as, hunters, shooters, fishermen, and archers.

All of us at some point have invested heavily in the “market”, “strategy”, and/or “resources” of our industry.  We can’t help but look at the bottom line… The Mission/Vision of our TV Show, DVD sales, product development, and/or accessory resources.   The dream we have to succeed in our industry, to be known, sought after, respected, asked to speak, interviewed, quoted, published, and yes even 1st in the ratings.

And in the midst of all that… people are the most important part of the journey.

25 So Jesus got them together to settle things down. He said, “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads.26 It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.27 Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave.28 That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.”

Matthew 20: 25-28

If I might suggest… We (including myself) have a tendency to throw our weight around and quickly our success goes rapidly to our heads.  In the midst of rapid success we forget to invest in those around us.  Jesus modeled for us… whoever wants to be first, must serve others.

May I submit that we consider asking ourselves… Who am I investing in?

Also,  let me encourage you to make a list of everyone who has played a part in your journey to where you are today and say a special, “Thank you” to them.  Here is a link to a post (No One Ever Got To The Top Alone) that I wrote in 2008 recalling all the folks who have invested in my life over the years as a pastor.  I hope you find it helpful.  I too need to update my, “Thank You” list…
