Ask for BIG things…

Has it ever crossed your mind that sometimes we don’t ask for enough of the right things from God in our lives.  I hear people all the time say, “Pastor, I pray to God all the time.”  My question is, “Then, what is it that you are asking Him for?”  I tell you what got me to thinking about this.

Last Thursday evening my oldest son Caleb wasn’t sure we were going on our camping/hunting trip, because my wife Stephanie had put her name in to subsitute teach at our Friends Christian School on Fridays.  And if mom gets called in on Fridays to sub… well then, our trip would be off.  SO, Caleb stayed up most of the night praying that mom wouldn’t get called into sub.  To Caleb’s great surprise and “answered prayer”, Stephanie didn’t get called in so we were able to take our little over night trip.  He should have prayed for the new bow he is wanting… wink, wink….

THINK:

Has it ever dawned on you as it has me that sometime my prayers are so temporal.  They stem from a need for quick answers to temporary things.  Quick fixes for my selfish wants.  A need for God to fix my stupid mistakes.  What if…. we were as Elisha was in 2 Kings 2 when he asked of Elijah the prophet, “May I receive a double portion of the prophetic spirit that energizes you.”  First, you probably haven’t read 2 Kings in a while as most of us haven’t.  It is in the Old Testament and packed full of great learnings. Second, is…. WHAT?!…  I don’t know about you, but that’s not the normal prayer that I pray, anyway.  But think about it.

“Do not pray for easy lives, pray to be stronger men and women, Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, pray for powers equal to your tasks”

– Philip Brooks

READ:

2:1 Just before the Lord took Elijah up to heaven in a windstorm, Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal. 2:2 Elijah told Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As certainly as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 2:3 Some members of the prophetic guild in Bethel came out to Elisha and said, “Do you know that today the Lord is going to take your master from you?” He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”

2:4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he replied, “As certainly as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho. 2:5 Some members of the prophetic guild in Jericho approached Elisha and said, “Do you know that today the Lord is going to take your master from you?” He answered, “Yes, I know. Be quiet.”

2:6 Elijah said to him, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he replied, “As certainly as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they traveled on together. 2:7 The fifty members of the prophetic guild went and stood opposite them at a distance, while Elijah and Elisha stood by the Jordan. 2:8 Elijah took his cloak, folded it up, and hit the water with it. The water divided, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

2:9 When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “What can I do for you, before I am taken awayfrom you?” Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of the prophetic spirit that energizes you.

ACT:

Pray differently this week.  Pray for a double portion of God’s power in your life to face whatever comes your way.

Gone but not forgotten….

Have you ever had a gun, bow, fish’n rod, or outdoor piece of equipment that you wished you had never gotten rid of.  I do,  on several occasions.  The one that I was most recently reminded of came at the 2011 SHOT Show when I past by the Ruger Booth.  There it was beautiful stainless steel, 7.5 in barrel, 6 shot, .44, Super Redhawk with Hogue Grips.  Wow, did that bring back memories.  That is one gun I hope to put back in my safe in the coming years.  I recall from 1992 – 1997 some great years of hunting and shooting with that old gun.

THINK:

Is there anything in your spiritual walk that you’ve gotten rid of or wished you had never stopped doing.  You know sometimes we put away things in our walk with God, because we don’t think we’ll need them again…. until we reach a situation where we wished we had it in our backpack.  This could be as simple as our daily time with God for prayer and bible reading.  It could also be that very important spiritual partner in your life that holds you accountable for you spiritual walk, life decisions, and future.  What is gone in your spiritual walk this very day, but not forgotten.  Reclaim what once made you healthy.

READ:

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Joshua 1:8

ACT:

Make today the first day of reclaiming those tools that make you the best version of you that you can be.  (i.e. – bible reading, specific time of prayer, journal, spiritual partner, accountability, etc…)  Stop right now and decide on one thing you will do this week that will bring you closer to your Creator God.
